Mercury and Fish
Mercury, which occurs naturally in our environment, can be harmful to young children and unborn babies. Larger fish, which typically live longer, can accumulate large amounts of mercury and should be avoided by these vulnerable groups.
These include: 1. Shark 2. Swordfish 3. King Mackerel 4. Tilefish 5. Small and large-mouth bass 6. Walleye 7. Lake trout 8. Northern pike 9. some forms of tuna
Fish and shellfish can contribute to heart health and proper growth and development and therefore, are an important part of a healthy diet.
They contain high quality proteins and other essential nutrients, are low in saturated fat, and contain omega-3 fatty acids.
